Housing
While supporting families with educational needs one thing that kept popping up was housing. We understand that our children's education suffers if they are facing unsafe living conditions and inadequate housing . So in response we educated ourselves on tenants rights and began holding monthly Tenants Rights and Responsibilities workshops. We are also teaming up with community partners in an effort to find ways collectively to address the issue of affordable housing.
Education
We believe that our children's education is in a crisis. SUNL's focus is to empower the parents of the community with the knowledge to advocate for their children's education. A goal of ours is to have learning centers within New London County. We hope to accomplish this by listening to our youth to learn what they feel is best for their learning experience.
Community Engagment
Along side community partners our goal is help meet some of the needs of our community. One very important aspect of SUNL is building relationships. We are working hard in building that For Us By Us mindset where we all come as one and create a better community together. We are not just building relationships with New London we are building relationships throughout New London County.
Community Gatherings
We are constantly engaging with our community. Throughout the year we hold many events to talk and build long lasting relationships with our community. We host an annual Trunk or Treat in the month of October. SUNL hosts an annual Thanksgiving community meal where we share a meal on Thanksgiving day with all our community members. In December we partner with OIC and Toy for Tots to share the holiday spirit with everyone.
"Do not get lost in a sea of despair. Be hopeful, be optimistic. Our struggle is not the struggle of a day, a week, a month, or a year, it is the struggle of a lifetime. Never ever be afraid to make some noise and get in good trouble, necessary trouble."
